This delectable homestyle apple crumble is one of those delectable, versatile dishes that you can eat hot or cold, you can add different fruits to your crumble such as peaches, apricots, cherries or nectarines which can be stewed and substituted for the apple. Canned peaches or apricots (well-drained) can also be used, although you can’t beat the flavour of home-cooked and stewed apples.

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 25 to 30 minutes

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients

4 large green cooking apples peeled and sliced

1 tbsp soft brown sugar

2 tablespoons golden syrup

2 tablespoons lemon juice

Topping

3/4 cup self-raising flour

1/2 cup desiccated coconut

1/2 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup soft brown sugar

100g butter

How to prepare this delectable Apple Crumble

Brush a shallow dish with melted butter or sunflower oil.  Put the Apple sugar golden syrup and lemon juice in a large saucepan covered with a lid,  and cook over low heat for 10 minutes or until the apples soften.  Spoon the apple mixture into the dish. 

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.

To make topping

In a bowl combine, flour, coconut, rolled oats and sugar mix, stirring thoroughly.  Make a well in the centre and pour into the well with the dry ingredients mixed to form a crumble.

Evenly spread the crumble mixture over the apples.

Bake your delicious apple crumble for 25 to 30 minutes until the topping is crisp and golden.

Serve with whipped cream or ice cream,  sprinkling with cinnamon is optional.
